HELMETS…

HELMET COMMUNICATION to Canada Reps regarding HECC Certification - There is no expiry on helmets the only thing a referee is required to see is the CSA sticker.

Submitted by Chris Canuel, AVMHA Referee In Chief

TO ALL INVOLVED WITH HOCKEY ON VANCOUVER ISLAND (DUNCAN TO PORT ALBERNI)

PLEASE FORWARD THIS E-MAIL TO EVERYONE IN YOUR HOCKEY ORGANIZATION OR OTHER ORGANIZATIONS IN YOUR CITY.

Some people in Nanaimo, Parksville, Port Alberni and Duncan (parents, managers, safety persons, executive, officials etc) are taking it upon themselves to misinform other players, parents and officials on the equipment regulations of the sport.  ReAction Source for Sports will always be informed before anyone in the public or association on regulation changes, rule changes, equipment upgrades etc.  Our purchasing for an upcoming season happened 10 month prior the season starting (Industry Standards testing – CSA and HECC) happen 1 year prior to us even seeing the equipment.  If there is a change or regulation change we will know about it because it will affect our purchasing for the next year.

With regards to HELMET DATING and HECC Dated stickers on helmets, Please read the attached letter so we can stop misinforming people.  I have had this letter in my store since the summer.  According to the letter, information was to be sent to all Minor Hockey Association so I did not forward it until today.  Please read and forward to whomever you deem should have this information.  The reason for sending this letter today is due to some parents coming into ReAction telling me they have an EXPIRED HELMETS.  Although it is not recommended to have a helmet more then 3 or 4 years, there is NO EXPIRY DATE ON HELMETS at this point.

I would recommend that every team have this letter printed and available at each and every game.  I would recommend every REFEREE IN CHIEF forward this letter to your officials.

If anything else come up in the future with regards to equipment, rules, changes, please come see me or e-mail me, it is most likely something I have information on or I can get information on.  We are always informed by our suppliers to changes well in advance of our next season.

The e-mail below is from my REEBOK/CCM rep

Thank you,

Sean Krause

HECC Certification Expiry Date on Reebok & CCM Helmets.

There have been some questions with consumers & referee’s, questioning the meaning of the expiry date on helmets stickers.  If you have had these questions, please see and/or print the attached one page communication letter.

HECC & CSA EXPIERY DATES ON HELMETS STICKERS ARE A DATE FOR REVIEWING THE STANDARDS ONLY AND ARE NOT RELATED TO THE USEFUL LIFE OF THE HELMET.  Plus the date has been extended a year & a half from the printed date on the stickers.

There will be a letter sent soon from CSA to all Minor Hockey associations stating this information.

When this letter comes out, I will send it to you as well.  In the meantime, you can use the letter attached.

Please read below.

Any questions, please advise,

Sandy Lynch

SUBJECT: Hockey Helmet Certification and Life Span

Hockey Canada has endorsed that all hockey helmets sold in Canada be accompanied by a Canadian Standards Association (CSA) certification label. The CSA Technical Committee on Equipment and Facilities for Ice Hockey has recently sent out a memo clarifying each certification sticker accompanied on a hockey helmet.that all hockey helmets sold in Canada be accompanied by a Canadian Standards Association (CSA) certification label. The CSA Technical Committee on Equipment and Facilities for Ice Hockey has recently sent out a memo clarifying each certification sticker accompanied on a hockey helmet.
Virtually all hockey helmets sold in Canada bear 3 stickers indicating third-party testing and certification of the helmet because of the need for manufacturers to meet the mandated standards within 3 jurisdictions. The certification marks include the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) certification label which must appear on all helmets sold in Canada that are intended for use in ice hockey; the Hockey Equipment Certification Council (HECC) certification sticker which is mandatory for hockey helmets in the United States; and the European Union’s required CE marker for hockey helmets intended for sale and use in Europe.
The sale of hockey helmets is regulated in Canada by Health Canada under the Hazardous Products Act. Hockey Canada, however, only permits the use of hockey helmets certified to CSA Standard Z262.1 for all players under its jurisdiction.
Some confusion has arisen over the HECC certification stickers on hockey helmets sold in Canada because they bear a time limit. This time limit is related only to the length of certification (originally 5 years but changed recently to 6.5 years) granted by HECC for a given helmet, and is not an indication of the life-span of a hockey helmet. HECC certified hockey helmets are mandated for players playing under the jurisdiction of USA Hockey. The HECC certification sticker does not apply in Canada. The only certification sticker that should be verified for play under the jurisdiction of Hockey Canada is the presence of the CSA certification label on the helmet.

YELLOW CARD SYSTEM

All spectators at large are reminded to “behave” while watching minor hockey in the Alberni Valley Multiplex or in other communities where YOU are representing AVMHA.  The “Yellow Card System” is now in effect on Vancouver Island to “educate and raise awareness of inappropriate behavior in the stands”.  Please check out www.viaha.com for more info.

Issuing a Yellow Card is not meant to be confrontational.  It is to draw attention to inappropriate behavior which contravenes the spirit of good sportsmanship, detracts from the enjoyment of the game by all watching and that such behavior will not be tolerated (whether a fan from the other team or your own team).  It goes without saying that each situation will be different and how you approach it will vary.  Let SpeakOut and Respect in Sport be your guide.

Conversation is not necessary – you can simply say “Excuse me” and hand them the card.  All associations will be given posters to post in prominent spots at all arenas regarding the program.

WEAR YOUR NECKGUARDS PROPERLY

ALL PLAYERS:  Please wear your neckguards properly.

You may be a personal safety risk and also a penalty infraction if not adhering to the correct way of wearing your neck guard (applies to the t-shirt/neck guard combo).  Make sure the zipper is NOT broken or that the neck guard doesn’t slip under the neckline.

There are too many AVMHA  players that are not wearing this extremely important safety feature properly.

AVMHA may be forced to implement a new neck guard rule where there will be player suspensions (if not worn correctly) in the very near future.
